Satyajit Ray (2 Mei 1921-23 April 1992) is a film director from India. He is widely recognized as one of the major figures in world cinema in the 20th century. Born in Kolkata, comes from a Bengali family prominent in the arts and literature. Ray was educated at Presidency College and also at the University of Visva-Bharati, founded by the school yanng famous poet Rabindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan. Ray began his career as a commercial artist, his interest in world cinema began when he met with a French director, Jean Renoir and the Italian movie homage neoralis, Bycycle Thieves during his visit to London.


He is a prolific director and skilled in many areas, directing 37 films, including short films and documentaries. His first film, Pather Panchali, won 11 international awards, including Best Human Document at Cannes Film Festival. Followed by Aparajito and Apur Sansar, his third is a unity in the Apu trilogy - this work is widely regarded as his masterpiece.

The early days

Satyajit Ray's ancestors can be traced back at least ten generations in kebelakang.Awal brilliance in his family history was started by his grandfather, Upendrakishore Raychowdhury, a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher and expert on amateur astronomy. Raychowdhury was the leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a socio-religious movement in the 19th century in Bengal. Ray's father died when he was three years old, and his mother worked hard to provide livelihood for them both. In 1940, his mother urged to continue to Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore. But Ray was reluctant to follow the advice of his mother, and also based on his love for his hometown, Kolkata.
