Alija Izetbegovic (8 August 1925-19 October 2003) was an activist, lawyer, writer, philosopher and politician who became the first president of Bosnia Herzegovina in 1990. He served until 1996, after which he became a member of the presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina until 2000. He also wrote several books including a successful market is Islam Between East and West and the Islamic Declaration.
