Joachim Gauck (born January 24, 1940) is the President of Germany, was elected on March 18, 2012. A former Lutheran pastor, he became famous as a civil rights activist in the anti-communist East Germany.
During the Peaceful Revolution, he was the founder of the opposition movement New Forum in East Germany, which have an impact on the fall of the Soviet-backed dictatorship of the German Socialist Unity Party (SED). Former East German pro-democracy activist Joachim Gauck was elected president of Germany after the majority of MPs vote on Sunday (3/18/2012).
