Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599 - August 6, 1660), often called Diego Velázquez, the leading Spanish painters at the time of King Philip IV. He is a contemporary artist in the Baroque period known as a portrait painter. Two visits to Italy, as an envoy from the kingdom of Spain, well-documented. In addition to paintings of historical figures and cultural leaders, he also created many paintings of the Spanish royal family and European leaders of his day, culminating in his masterpiece painting, Las Meninas (1656).
At the beginning of the 19th century, the works of
Velázquez as a model for the flow of realist painters and the Impressionists, especially Édouard Manet. Since then, many modern painters, including
Pablo Picasso and
Salvador Dalí, paid tribute to Velázquez by recreating several famous works.
